The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has escalated the weather warning for Hyderabad and nearby districts from an orange alert to a red alert, citing the likelihood of very heavy rainfall over the next two days.
According to the IMD’s forecast, intense rain or thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds between 40 and 50 kmph are expected to hit several parts of the city on Wednesday and Thursday. Mist or haze could dominate early hours, with winds shifting from north-westerly to westerly or south-westerly at speeds of 6–10 kmph.
The department has cautioned about widespread waterlogging in low-lying zones, traffic delays, slippery roads, and possible damage to trees and electric poles. Disruptions in electricity and other essential services may occur for short periods. Drainage congestion is also anticipated in several areas.
Authorities have advised restricted movement and urged the municipal corporation to initiate clearance operations where necessary. Residents have been asked to stay updated on advisories, avoid waterlogged roads, and follow safety instructions.
The IMD categorises this event under the “high risk” level, which requires immediate precautionary measures. Rainfall intensity could fall into the “very intense” or “extremely intense” range, with the possibility of exceeding 10 cm per hour in some locations.
